Many Fisherman go early morning between 2-4 o'clock fishing. They put nets out and haul them back 2-3 hours later. About 08:00 o'clock they return to shore. The job is done. Now old men and woman come from the village to get the fish out of the nets. This is a complex work and lasts approximately 1 hr, as wages they may keep a part of the catch, that is their living costs. Now the actual fishing work is end and one begins with repair work. Nets and equip- ment must be repaired,and other. Work is divided between man and woman. Man repairs nets and boat, woman dry fish and complete fishing lines. All these work is settled in community, often in groups, whereby one converses and talk about newest events. Things to do together, to divide, to possess, to use or simply to be into the community or group to undergo and to experience, are explicit Philippine characteristics. Here in this video of Malapascua we see a group of fisher after work is done, playing cards. Life is easy on Malapascua. |

This Video shows the MACTAN-SHRINE in Cebu City which contains the famous monument of the Philippine Hero Lapu-Lapu and the memorial of the Portuguese discoverer Ferdinand Magellan who “discovered” the Philippines during his Worldcircumnavigation. He landed on the island of Cebu on April 7. There he made an alliance with the ruler of the island and agreed to help him attack the neighboring natives on the island of Mactan. Magellan was killed by Chief Lapu-Lapu on April 27, 1521 during the Mactan expedition. Ferdinand Magellan proved to the world and all those who rejected his ideas that one could circum- navigate the world. Magellans discoveries and passages opened new doors to a larger world. He will always be remembered as the first man who sailed around the world. |

The Blotched Hawkfish has large, irregular shaped blotches on the sides of the body. There is a distinct spot on the operculum behind the eye and cirri on the tips of the dorsal spines. This species grows to 12 cm in length. Like most of the hawkfishes, this species is often observed motionless on the bottom, propped up on its thickened lower pectoral fin rays. The Blotched Hawkfish occurs in tropical and some warm temperate marine waters of the Indo-Pacific. |
||||||
The Anemonefish have a special symbiotic (mutaully beneficial) relationship with sea anemones. Normally, the nematocysts (stinging cells) of an anemone's tentacles discharge when fish brush against the tentacles, paralyzing the fish. But anemonefish appear to be at home among the tentacles, even hiding among them as predators approach. There are many theories concerning the mechanism that makes this possible, but the most widely held view is that these fish have a special biochemical makeup of their mucus layer that provides protection from the stinging cells. Stingrays are a triangular flat shape. With a tapering tail that is armed with one or more spines. Most of them don’t have pelvic or dorsal fins. Stingrays are not usually aggressive. Habitat: Stingrays live in warm and tropical areas. As the climate gets cooler they move to a deeper place. They rummage on the sea bottom and only attack if they have been stepped on or threatened. They feed on molluscs, small fish, worms and other little creatures. |
||||||
The Grey Moray is a elongate scaleless fish with a large mouth full of prominent backward facing teeth, hinged so that they can fold back but lock when
prey tries to struggle free. The dorsal fin is high and fleshy with a blue tinge along the edge. Its body colour is pale grey with faint darker markings. The Grey Moray lives in rocky reef areas around offshore
islands, spending most of its time with its head emerging from its cave or crevice, mouth agape. The open-mouthed stance is not aggression - morays need to continuously draw water through their small gills. They are active mostly
at night but move about during the day more than Yellow Morays, often being seen entwined in kelp fronds. Their diet is made up of crabs, sea urchins, and small fish such as blennies and scorpionfish.When hooked morays fight
energetically even tying themselves in knots and it is often impossible to remove the hook. |
||||||
The Spotted Grubfish has small pale grey to brown spots on the upper sides of the body. There is a dark line or series of close-set spots laterally and
a pattern of dark blotches low on the sides. This species has a dark ocellus on the caudal peduncle and large dark spots on the head. It is known from coastal marine waters from shallow waters to a depth of
at least 80m |

The Stars and Stripes Toadfish can be recognised by its colour pattern. The body is greenish to yellowish brown above and white below. The upper sides of the body and caudal fin are covered in small white spots. The lower sides have white to pale blue lines. The pectoral fin base and gill opening are enclosed by alternating dark and light rings. 'View fact sheet' |
||||||
The Striped Anglerfish (Antennarius striatus) is a very unusual looking fish and belongs to the family Antennaridae. Anglerfishes are unique in having a third dorsal fin that is enlarged and usually their first dorsal fin is modified to serve as a luring tool to capture prey. The lure consists of a stalk that is known as the “illicium” and the bait on the end is known as the “esca”. The Anglerfish uses the lure to attract other prey such as small fish. Small fish see the lure, which may look like a worm, invertebrate or tiny fish and as the prey swims in to grab the bait the Anglerfish strikes with lightning speed. The strike of the Anglerfish is one of the fastest movements in the ocean. Anglerfish feed predominantly on other fish. |

The Stone Fish is a mottled brown-greenish in colour (which gives them camouflage) with many venomous spines along its back.The stonefish lives primarily above the tropic of Capricorn. Its main habitat is on coral reefs, near and about rocks, or can be found dormant in the mud or sand. It feeds on small fish and shrimps.The sting causes excruciating pain and a great deal of swelling rapidly develops causing death to tissues. The severity of the symptoms depends on the depth of penetration and the number of spines penetrated. The symptoms of the venom are muscle weakness, temporary paralysis and shock, which may result in death if not treated. |
